Diagnosis and Symptoms

Question from Eureka, Illinois, USA:

Since she was three, my now seven year old daughter has passed out about five times in the early morning before eating (that we are aware of) for no apparent reason, but the last time we took her to the hospital they said her blood sugar was low. They got her some juice, but nothing else was ever said about it. Heart and seizure problems have been ruled out. Should we be more concerned about the low blood sugar?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Your concern really should depend on whether it was a the ER staff documented low blood sugar with a blood test or if it was intuition. If it was a documented low blood sugar, then you should pursue a reason and treat it appropriately. If it was ER intuition, then you should pursue testing of her blood sugar at the times when your daughter passes her passing out to help determine the cause. Either way, you should follow up closely with your daughter’s physician to appropriately diagnose this problem.
