Meal Planning, Food and Diet
Question from North Carolina, USA:
What are good food choices for parties and special education that elementary teachers may give to students with diabetes? A food list would help. Thank you.
Answer:
Children with diabetes often can eat the same snacks that other children have. For instance 2 Oreos are equal to a slice of bread or one carbohydrate serving. A cupcake without icing counts as one carbohydrate serving. Other healthier snacks would include fruits, fruit leathers, popcorn, Chex-mix, party crackers, and pretzels to name a few. There are some sugarfree ice cream products such as Eskimo Pie ice cream sandwiches. Parents should be involved in selecting snacks. Some children restrict all sugar while others include them in moderation in their diets.
