Question from Wausau, Wisconsin, USA:
What are the typical signs of diabetes to watch for in a child younger than three years old?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
Signs, short of overt acidosis, that suggest diabetes in the very young do include excessive thirst and urination but also failure to gain weight. They may also reflect the signs of what is precipitating insulin dependence, e.g., an infection. However, diagnosis usually depends on very simple tests for urine sugar and an elevated fasting blood sugar.
