What can you tell me about a phenomenon called “Double Diabetes” where the patient has type 1diabetes and then develops symptoms of type 2 diabetes?

The phenomenon you are talking about was discussed recently at CNN.com and in several other news sources. There are those with both types of diabetes. Mostly, it is a clear type 1 who then, as a teen begins to gain weight and require lots of insulin. When checked, there are signs of the metabolic syndrome, central weight gain, elevated lipids, hypertension, etc. A family history of obesity, type 2 diabetes, early heart attacks, strokes, and a minority heritage only adds fuel to the fire. Sometimes it is very hard to know what the type of diabetes it really is. Insulin always works, but sometimes we try oral agents to see the effect.
