Insulin Pumps

Question from Wheaton, Illinois, USA:
What do you think about putting a 5 year old on the pump? For three years we have been getting blood glucoses all over the map and are particularly concerned about night-time lows. We track and monitor closely. How young do you see children go on the pump?

Please see our slide show about insulin pumps. Pumps are okay for kids this age if all the support you need is there — since a 5 year old cannot manage a pump him/herself.
I would carefully consider all the options with your diabetes team.
P.S.: Erratic blood sugars are not uncommon in this age group especially if you are “chasing” the high sugars with extra insulin.
