Question from St. Louis, Missouri, USA:

What is an appropriate treatment plan for an eight year old with type 1 diabetes diagnosed about eight months ago? She is doing finger sticks twice daily, and lives in a small village in Nicaragua with limited health care and understanding of the disease. Is there educational material in Spanish to be shared by family and staff?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Yes, there is quite a bit of material available in Spanish. Start with Publicaciones sobre la Diabetes en Espaol at http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/diabetes/diabetes.htm#spanish. Then, see Pregntale a NOAH sobre la diabetes at http://www.noah.cuny.edu/sp/illness/diabetes/spdiabetes.html. In addition, please see my On-line Diabetes Resources Part 9: Non-English Web Sites at http://www.mendosa.com/nonengl.htm if those two sites don’t give you what you need.

[Editor’s comment: It is difficult to comment on the treatment plan since you do not mention what else (e.g. insulin, meal planning, other medications) is included. Checking twice day seems reasonable given her circumstances.
