Question from United States:
What is the recommended frequency of eye exams for a type 1 (who does not have any background retinopathy/complicating factors) during pregnancy?
Answer:
The current recommendation is to have a comprehensive dilated retinal examination prior to conception, and then again during the first trimester. Subsequent examination frequency then depends on specific findings during the first trimester exam (i.e., in the absence of retinopathy at the first trimester exam, a repeat exam may be deferred until after delivery, but if retinopathy develops during the first trimester, the patient should be seen at least every three months and as frequently as every month, depending on the severity of the retinopathy).
