Question from Townsville, Queensland, Australia:
What type of grief and loss does a 15 year old girl go through when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes? What type of support should she receive?
Answer:
The grief of “carefree” childhood days being lost can deeply impact a youth with type 1 diabetes. The daily monitoring of blood sugars and watchfulness can wear some folks out. It is normal to go through transition once diagnosed with diabetes. This can last for months or in some cases more. A teen does not want to be “different” from their peers and diabetes makes them different. Loving family support is helpful in navigating these feelings of loss. Also, a connection with another teen who has mastered diabetes can be helpful too.
