Diagnosis and Symptoms, Hyperglycemia and DKA
Question from Jasper, Indiana, USA:
When a person is diagnosed with a blood glucose in the 1000s mg/dl [over 55.6 mmol/L], is there more damage to the body and pancreas than a person who is, say, 600 mg/dl [33.3 mmol/L]? And, will the higher blood glucose take longer to gain control of the disease, that is, after the blood glucose is brought back down in the normal range?
Answer:
The higher initial blood glucose either means there has been a longer period of time without insulin availability – or there was a large amount of simple sugar/carbohydrate being ingested just before the blood glucose level was taken (for instance, taking care of increased thirst with regular soda inadvertently). There isn’t much else of importance in the height of the initial blood glucose.
