Question from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA:
I have a 20-year-old son who was with type 1 diabetes about two years ago. Would it be beneficial to have his 15-year-old brother, who does not have diabetes, take Omega 3 supplements to help cut the risk of developing type 1 diabetes?
Answer:

There is no evidence that Omega supplements do this, except in some research studies. It is not much likely that there is harm, but the benefits and risks are unknown for any individual. You may want to discuss whether or not there are research studies available that would provide genetic testing and/or antibody testing as this could help determine more detailed risk for siblings.
