Insulin

Question from Charlotte, North Carolina, USA:

You have stated that a vial of insulin is only good 28 days refrigerated or not and a cartridge is only good for a week. My daughter’s diabetes team told us that Lantus lasts 90 days in refrigerator and Novolog is good for 28 days in the pen. Just wondering if it’s different for Lantus and Novolog.

Answer:

Exact rules for how long insulin lasts are not really known since so much depends upon temperature exposure, storage etc. Usually most people recommend all vials be used only for one month since this is safe. They can probably go longer, but there is some risk of losing potency. Talk to your diabetes team since they will know what usually works with others in your climate.

How should I store LANTUS?

Store new LANTUS vials in the refrigerator (not the freezer) between 36F – 46F (2C – 8C). Do not freeze LANTUS. If a vial freezes, throw it away. Once a vial is opened, you can keep it in the refrigerator or as cool as possible (below 86F [30C]). The 10 mL vial is good for 28 days. Keep LANTUS out of direct heat and light. For example, do not leave it in your car on a summer day.

How and where should NovoLog be stored?

NovoLog should be stored in the refrigerator-between 2oC and 8oC (36oF and 46oF)-until first use. Do not freeze. Cartridges or vials that are in use may be kept at room temperature-below 30oC (86oF)-for up to 28 days. Do not store NovoLog in areas of extreme moisture or where there may be extreme temperatures, such as in a freezer or car.
