I was 16 and stressed out from my first dating relationship and a big theatre production I was in. I was losing weight which I didn’t mind because I looked great in my costume. Drinking more and more every week. Started vomiting and we assumed it was the flu. One night I was so ridiculously thirsty and came out to use the restroom around 3am, and apparently collapsed on the couch. My mom found me hours later when she woke up, and she and my brother rushed me to the hospital. I briefly woke up and thought an angel was talking to me, but it was an endocrinologist telling me I had diabetes. He told my mom my BG was 1140, more than 10 times normal. Five days later I was released with a regimen of two shots a day of Regular and Lente insulins, and test strips that required a giant drop of blood, wipe off and read manually, which took more than two minutes. Now I have a closed loop pump/CGM and still doing pretty well 39 years later. Can’t wait to get my 50-year medal!
