Annette Hess

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 10 by Dr. Johnnie W. Stevens. Dr. Stevens passed away on December 25, 2023. He was a significant mentor in my life and taught me to always reach for the stars. As a diabetes researcher, family nurse practitioner, and nursing faculty, I am involved in diabetes management daily in two diabetes clinics and work diligently toward improving the outcomes locally and nationally. I am truly thankful for Lilly for my quality of life!

My mother, Phyllis Jean Whorton, applied for my 25 year Lilly Diabetes Journey Award many years ago. I miss her so very much. She told me three years ago to not forget to get my 50 year journey award. She passed away in March of 2020.
