Benjamin
From his mom, Melissa:
Benjamin was diagnosed two weeks after his 1st birthday. Like many of his fellow T1Ds, his journey is one of bravery, resilience, patience and strength. As parents we have learned that a T1D diagnosis is hard at any age, and each stage of life comes with its own challenges. The early years were filled with hurdles like finding childcare, navigating pump sites and diapers, unbelievable sensitivity to carbs, failed sites from playground equipment static and so much more. As an 11-year-old, he notices he is different, which has led to more empathy for those around him who also have differences (visible and hidden). As he enters 5th grade, he has embraced taking more responsibility for his daily management and gaining more independence – and we couldn’t be more proud.
Benjamin may not know a life without T1D, but it is inspiring to watch him grow and thrive in spite of this disease that tried its best to steal his carefree childhood away. He has backpacked through mountains, rafted rivers, learned to snowboard and ski and so much more. T1D has not stopped him and we are so grateful for the insulin that keeps him alive while we work toward a cure. It is hard to believe we are here – ten years in. While some days have been long, the years have flown by, and we are forever indebted to our medical teams, teachers, friends and family who have supported Benjamin and our family throughout this journey.
We are proud of you Benjamin!
