In 2009, my life changed forever when I was in a hospital bed in 7th grade receiving steroids for the inflammation I had in my large intestine. These steroids were helping the inflammation in my body, but were causing my blood sugar to spiral out of control. I was then given instruction how to manage blood sugar using insulin injections because I was diagnosed with steroid-induced diabetes. After I had tapered off of the steroids, my blood sugars seemed to normalize and I wasn’t taking injections anymore. Fast forward a couple months and through routine bloodwork they found out my blood sugars were creeping back up and I was then diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Throughout the years I had been on insulin injections and finally switched to the pump in 2020. It wasn’t until the pandemic happened that I really discovered the online diabetes community. Ever since I found this community, it has changed my life for the better. My management has improved, my outlook on life and diabetes has improved, I don’t let it hold me back as much as I used to. I’ve met countless other Type 1s out there and if there’s anything positive about this diagnosis, it’s the people it’s led me to meeting and the person it’s led me to become.
