My diabetes diagnosis came when I was seven years old in 1971. Back then, there were not as many advancements as we have now! I was in the hospital for two weeks and did urine tests with a test tube and little tablets dropped into a urine/water mixture. It was antiquated — and not at all accurate! As the years went by, more and more advancements became available. Diabetes camps also played a HUGE role in my ability to live a successful life WITH diabetes! I was in the diabetes camping industry for over 30 year at three different camps and at different job positions. I loved it. But what I loved more was communicating with the campers and their families. It was important to me to make sure that the campers got the same experiences I was given: to be “normal” for two weeks and not feel so alone, scared, or just mad at having diabetes. Programs like you offer are life changing — not just for the kids — but for the entire family. I look forward to another many more years living the diabetes life!
