I was ten years old when I was diagnosed in 1972. I had the flu prior to being diagnosed. My family thought my symptoms were flu related. I was losing weight at an alarming rate. My pediatrician said that I was depressed. We saw many different doctors. None of them did any blood work or testing. I would fall asleep in school, while getting dressed, at the dinner table etc. I didn’t even wake up when I wet the bed which happened every night. My mouth was so dry my tongue would be stuck to the roof of my mouth every morning. Finally my grandpa got me in to his doctor who was very thorough. He put me right in the hospital. I was started on NPH and Regular insulin twice a day, injected with a glass syringe and thick needle. I got my first pump in 1996. A few months ago I upgraded my Medtronic 770G to the 780G. I’m doing well. My A1c has been 5.9-6.5 for several years.
