I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 8 and have lived through many advancements in treatment. My first insulin was not a synthetic recombinant like Humilin but was pork insulin. Yes … PORK the insulin bottles had in bold red letters “PORK” down the sides of the bottles while others had “BEEF”. While this being common options when ordering tacos it is an odd things to see on your life saving medication. Blood tests took close to 5 minutes, involved a water squirt bottle and a square of blotter paper to perform each BG. AT 8 years old all of this was quite overwhelming but my parents were very involved and did great at keeping me on the right path.
Now as a 50 year old adult I have a CGM the size of a nickel and a tubeless pod pump that work together to keep my a1C at a controlled 5.9. I am healthy with no major complications and consider the minor ones to be manageable. I am just amazed how far things and myself have come in the last 42 years.
