I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 6 years old so I don’t really remember much before that. I remember at diagnosis the doctors telling me and my parents that a cure was coming by the year 2000. I remember meeting my first friend with T1D and the joy that brought me. I remember my first insulin pump at age 11. I remember being a teenager and wanting nothing to do with diabetes but then I remember going to college and majoring in nutrition and nursing because I wanted everything to do with diabetes. My diabetes diagnosis led me into my career as a registered nurse. I remember taking care of my first patient with T1D. I remember having a pocket sewn into my wedding dress for my insulin pump. I remember my pregnancy and the birth of my daughter. Now 27 years in and I know there is much more coming that I will always remember. Here’s to the next 25 years with T1D.
