I was seven years old when I got T1D, but was diagnosed shortly after my 8th birthday. I still remember that the hospital was having a Valentine’s Day parade for all the kids the day I went in. I didn’t get to be part of it because I was just admitted, but some very kind nurses brought back beaded necklaces and party favors for me! Growing up, I always said that T1D was, “the worst birthday present EVER!” But I am so grateful for the positive side of this disease. I know I am strong, smart, resilient, and capable of taking on so many challenges. Living with T1D is my version of normal. There are good and bad days but I am so thankful for the healthcare I’m able to receive and the people I’ve been able to connect with. I may have diabetes, but I won’t let it dia-beat me!
