Kelsey
From her mom, Tiffany:
It was August 2014. Kelsey just started Kindergarten. Days were long and hot, as we lived in Macon, Georgia. I would pick Kelsey up and she would be so thirsty. I thought her thirst was coming from being outside at the end of the day. Mid-August Kelsey got what I thought was a stomach bug. She couldn’t shake it. I took her to the pediatrician’s office three times. They said the infection must be in her ‘gut’ so they prescribed probiotics. It seemed like she was getting better until I got the phone call on August 24. Kelsey was diagnosed with asthma when she was two. Her sitter called and said they thought Kelsey was having an asthma attack. I left work and picked her up. She was lifeless in my arms. I raced to the Children’s Hospital. They began treating her for an asthma attack. Nebulizer, oxygen, but then the blood work came back. They asked if Kelsey was a diabetic. Everything else that day is a blur. We took an airflight to Atlanta Children’s. Kelsey’s blood sugar was over 800 and she was in and out of consciousness. There were so many unknowns. Thankfully, all of Kelsey’s organs were ok. She was ok. We had a long road, but she was ok. I thought it would change everything. I was right about that, but as you go on the journey, you find your new normal. Here we are, 10 years later, and Kelsey is a healthy 14 year old. I am so thankful for that team of doctors that saved my baby. I am so proud of Kelsey for fighting and for walking this long road for the last 10 years.
