I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two weeks before my fourth birthday. I got to spend the Fourth of July on the top floor of the hospital and got the best view of the firework show in the town I lived in. That and having the room beside the play area were the two top things about finding out i had diabetes. Granted I was very young and didn’t really understand what was going on. In the past 30 years, I’ve only been had one DKA and was hospitalized for it for six days. I find that as a win for someone who has been living with T1 for 30 years. I did have a phase of “who cares” and “why me” while growing up, but what young adult wouldn’t. Diabetes is tough, but we are tougher!
