I was diagnosed at 18 months old. I almost did not survive. My mother would have to sit on my chest while giving me injections. I had seizures on a regular basis until I was eight years old. I remember waking up in the classroom once in first grade with the teacher and nurse crowded over me and all the children starring at me. In my 20s I lost sight in my left eye. In my 30s, I had a heart attack and quadruple bypass. Two years ago, I got my first CGM, and one year ago, my first pump. Now, my A1c is 6.2, and I am in much better control the any other time in my life. I have two children and two grand children. I hiked 43 miles in 5 days this last June at the Grand Canyon. I look forward to each day, and am especially excited about retiring in nine years. Technology has made life much easier, but I still hope that a cure is found soon, so that all those behind me will be able to look to a long, complication free life.
