Needless to say, at 25 it was an unexpected diagnosis. I kind of learned how to care for myself on my own. I was told by the first doctor I saw to get a blood glucometer and babysit myself. No bloodwork or education, nothing but a prescription for type 2 pills. That led to a week long stint in the ICU learning how to take insulin. It turns out I was type 1. Once I got some education and help from my ICU nurse, I was able to function. It actually made me pay more attention to my health and what my body was saying. I’ve raised two children and worked at physically demanding jobs. It’s great to see all of the advances since I was diagnosed.
