My T1D journey began as a 12 year old. My brother had died when I was seven from an untreatable brain tumor. My parents were never the same, but are the reason I am here today. I had great experiences with Dr. Sam Wentworth’s camp for kids with diabetes and an Explorer Post for diabetics as I learned about living with diabetes. Most of my teachers and coaches were understanding, caring, and helpful as I was diagnosed in 7th grade. I swam competitively at the YMCA and played basketball and volleyball at school. I still swim for exercise. I have great friends and am blessed with grandkids, my daughter and son in law, husband, and family who give me purpose in continuing to fight to be here. I have lost many friends and family to the complications of diabetes, but am not ready to give up the fight. I taught elementary school for 34 years and helped the school nurse with our diabetic students. I had one ambulance ride when my daughter was in 1st grade as my blood sugar was very low. I saw heaven, talked with God, and felt the peace that passes all understanding, but fought to get back as it was not my time. Each day with family and friends is a blessing and I try to help other persons with chronic illnesses. I only have three: T1D, RA, and asthma. I know many battling more. I am here for a purpose and continue to enjoy life helping others and because of my family, friends, and doctors’ support. Yes, I applied for other treatments and surgeries to cure diabetes, but never qualified as was “too healthy.” I was told the anti-rejection meds would be harder on me. Baylor and San Diego hospital rejected my applications . I was angry, but happy today to be here at 62 years old and 50 years with T1D. I got a Diabetic Alert Dog, Mio, eight years ago and she has kept my A1C in the best range that I have ever had. Life is good and I want to be here to enjoy it with my family and friends as long as I can.
