September 27th, 1999. That was the day my life and the lives of my family changed forever. Everything was scary and unknown. At only 20 months old, I had a life altering event. My mom was too afraid to give me my shots and would cry every time she had to. She woke up every hour for months, just to make sure I was ok. My life became a series of numbers and calculations. No one prepares you for the other side. There was fear, anger and trauma that had to be addressed. But now, it’s 2024. 25 years later, those feelings are afterthoughts. I ended up finding a career that I love and get to work with people who need help. I have become a fierce advocate for diabetes and healthcare in the US. I have seen people around me get diagnosed, including my brother. When diabetes gets to be too much, I remember where I was and where I am. My life would be vastly different and I will be forever grateful for the life I have.
