Rosemary Van Thomme

I was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 13. I was told by doctor that I would be lucky to see the age of 35. As a young teenage girl this was horrific to hear, and for years I couldn’t see myself growing old. Back in 1976 what my doctor told me may have been true, but he didn’t deliver the news with empathy or compassion, and didn’t take into account the research that was taking place at the time. I celebrate every birthday and recently turned 60. I am beyond proud of my accomplishments in life with diabetes. I have been married for 32 years, have two beautiful adult daughters, and see myself being a grandmother in the future. 50 years of living with T1D is just around the corner, and look forward to receiving a 50 year medallion.
