I was 18 years old and extremely sick all of the time. I started to lose weight, take a lot of naps and no one seemed to understand why I was feeling this way. I went to my mom’s one’s day after eating lunch and fell asleep. She said she was hollering my name and I couldn’t wake up on her couch. Her boyfriend, who has type 2 diabetes, had a meter. She made me take it because my grandpa also has type 2. My sugar read 435. I went to a doctor who said you’re type 2 since you’re 18.. I said no way I’m type 2. I’m young, I’m not overweight, and I eat healthy and workout. I requested a referral to an endocrinologist who confirmed a type 1 diagnosis. I had all present antibodies and low insulin in my body. From that day on, my life changed forever. There have been many ups and downs but with modern day technology I can live a seemingly normal life with type one diabetes. It’s not easy but in the long run taking care of myself will be worth it to myself, my babies, and my husband.
