Question from Florida, USA:
Why do you have to stay on schedule with eating and taking your shot?
Answer:
The basis of all diabetes management is to keep blood sugars evenly within more or less normal limits. In order to maintain blood sugars as much as possible within near normal limits, insulin doses have to synchronise with food intake and meals have to be evenly spaced. One of the important advantages of a insulin pump is that basal and bolus rates for insulin can be adapted to give much more flexibility in regard to food intake.

Additional comments from Dr. Robertson:
In a nutshell, you have to balance the food and insulin so that blood sugars stay controlled through the day. Because the insulin levels in your blood have to match the food being absorbed, moving away from a regular schedule will upset the balance.

Additional comments from Dr. Stuart Brink:
Staying on schedule makes it easier for you to decide what to do about your insulin. It also makes it easier to prevent having low sugars or very high sugars. And, lastly, it makes it easier to look at your blood glucose readings and try to find out what causes some of the ups and downs so there won’t be as many in the coming days.
