Question from Evansville, Indiana, USA:
My question is somewhat hypothetical. Can type 1 diabetes (juvenile onset) be avoided if a child follows a healthy diet before the onset of the disease? In other words, can a healthy diet overcome a hereditary predisposition to type 1 diabetes?

As far as we can tell, there isn’t anything anyone can do to prevent diabetes in a person. Various theories have been around, and certain studies are in progress, such as the diabetes prevention trials. However, as far as we know, lifestyle changes at present do not influence the onset of type 1 diabetes.
