Exercise and Sports
Question from Iran:
Would you please tell me about sports for people with diabetes?
Answer:
It is not clear what your specific question is, but to address this generally, exercise is an important part of the overall treatment plan for persons with diabetes. Exercise can assist in managing diabetes by lowering blood glucose levels. It has a role in reducing insulin resistance, increasing insulin sensitivity. It can assist in weight loss, lower blood pressure, improve the cholesterol profile and thereby reduce the risk of heart disease. Exercise is also about having fun!
People with diabetes can successfully participate in all kinds of sports and activities. Blood glucose monitoring before, during and after activity will assist in patterning the blood sugar response to that particular exercise. By working with your physician and diabetes team, a plan for adjusting carbohydrate intake and or medication can be made. The Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (DESA) is an excellent resource.
