My 20 month old daughter, who does not have diabetes, was recently treated for a virus that produced a very high fever (103-104F) for three days. When her urine was checked, it showed no signs of sugar, but her ketones were 80. Could this be a symptom of diabetes or would she have to also have sugar spilling into her urine?

Children frequently get ketones in their urine from being dehydrated during any type of illness. This is usually no cause for concern when the urine is positive for ketones and negative for glucose. It is easily corrected by aggressively supplying fluids during an illness.
