When I was younger, we routinely attributed the “onset” of diabetes to a traumatic event, such as an illness, recent flu or strep. We now know that the pancreas starts the process to diabetes months to years before we actually diagnose diabetes. The process proceeds until there aren’t enough islet cells to support the blood glucose. So, if you are sick the week before someone discovers diabetes, you might think the two were related when, more likely, it just was the final big push to diabetes, the final stress that the pancreas just couldn’t handle and not the cause.
