We recently spent some time with my 10 year old nephew who has diabetes and recently received an insulin pump. His parents say he can eat what ever he wants and appear to place no limits which would be expected for a healthy diet for a child who does not have diabetes. Is this attitude of nonstop sugar followed by frequent insulin bolusing healthy for him?

I am concerned that our daughter may be rebounding between 9:00 pm and 11:45 pm. How long does it take someone to go from an extreme low to a rebound? If one does rebound, is it more difficult to get the sugar level down the next day?

My four year old son is on multiple injections of Lantus in the morning and Humalog with meals, and while his blood sugars during the day are within normal limits, he has a rise from 9:00 pm-midnight. I have tried mixing Regular with Humalog at dinner, and changing his dinner meal to low-fat, low glycemic meals. High fat meals make the rise worse. I like using Lantus, but what can I add to it to help the rise?

I’ve been using an insulin pump for approximately three years, and lately I’ve been getting really frustrated with it, just from a range of minor annoyances. I was just wondering what new developments there have been in treatment regimens other than insulin pump therapy.

Last night my son ate a “sugar-free pudding”. We heard thrashing in our kitchen and he was in the first part of the seizure. They told us not to give him any more insulin until the morning, after we called his doctor. His blood sugars are now ranging from 200-450 mg/dl [11.1-25 mmol/l]. Was that right? Should I have given him a little insulin?

My son now uses Lantus at bedtime and Humalog with carb counting for all meals/snacks, but his A1c was 11% last week, and we were shocked. He hasn’t been in good control since diagnosis, but even his last A1c was 9%, so we felt with the new insulin regimen and careful monitoring, it would be better. Is there a connection there? Would we see a result is we requested another test in a month?
