My 16 year old son went off the pump two months ago and was placed back on Lantus at night with Humalog based on carb counting, but his sugars are high. He also refuses to keep a log, he as stopped exercising, and he refuses to go to a therapist. Should I make an earlier appointment? How long can he keep taking whatever insulin he feels like?

Since my son’s lunch is now a half and hour later than last year with a gym class before lunch, I asked his doctor if I could lower his morning Humalog so he doesn’t go low before lunch. He refused saying to increase his snack to 45 grams of carb. The problem is my son just can’t eat that much. Why can’t I adjust the insulin for this situation?

What are the consequences of having a blood sugar of over 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L] for an hour or so when one eats and the Humalog has not taken effect yet? She has always been a “stubborn” kind of kid, but since she has been on insulin, her mood swings have gotten worse. Is this just part of being five years old or is it related to the disease?

Is it normal practice to deny taking a patient because they have type 1 diabetes? We were just turned down as a new patient at a local pediatricians office because my son has type 1. I told them that he has a regular endocrinologist that he sees every three months for his diabetes but she told me that they are a small, busy practice and didn’t think their office was the best “fit” for my son.
