We recently went to visit the doctor for a routine check-up and were told that my son has not been getting enough insulin. He hasn’t been growing as he should be, and we were told that we should gradually increase his insulin. We’ve done this, going up 2 units twice daily, but his sugar levels have dropped drastically, and we can’t seem to get them back up.

Two hours later he will be high We bolus appropriately and usually he comes down by supper. At bedtime he is high again. Any advice on the very high post-prandial blood sugar?

My son is 12. At our last endocrinologist visit, the doctor told us that my son should not be eating a bed time snack and that people should eat dinner and be done eating for the night. I thought that is was important for a child with diabetes to have a small snack with some protein at night. Do you think it’s right that a growing boy should not have a snack at night before bed?

I agree that the idea of insulin glargine plus Humalog would probably be better, but the logistics of it seem impossible since school personnel will not administer insulin. That would mean t I would have to go to his school every day at lunch time, which is not possible. How do other people do this? Do they just wait until their kids are old enough to administer their own insulin?

After her diagnosis with type 1 last March, my daughter was on insulin for only two months when we had to stop the injections to avoid low blood sugars. Her fasting blood sugars are now slightly higher than the past few months. When should we resume insulin?
