Diagnosis and Symptoms

Our four and a half year old son has an abnormal EEG yet he does not present a typical seizure pattern, and he has moments of unexplained rage. We noticed he is asking for food during his movements, so we bought a home blood glucose meter and noticed that prior to the movements his readings are from 80-97 mg/dl [mmol/L]. Do you think it is worth pursuing?

My eight year old daughter was diagnosed about six months ago, but she had no antibodies present. How can my daughter have type 1 diabetes if there are no antibodies?

My symptoms include excessive shaking for about 20 minutes after I eat. I have been tested one time, but I was told the test that was given was not the proper way to test because I ate breakfast and was not even scheduled for this test when they did it.

During two hospital stays, an 84 year old had two elevated fasting blood sugars. She is several medications including HCTZ (12.5 mg every other day) which (so I have read) can raise glucose levels. If she stops the HCTZ, is it reasonable that we see a decrease in blood sugars or has some process been set into motion which cannot be stopped?

I have hypoglycemia and for the last month or so, my blood sugars are constantly out of control. Additionally, food just seems to sit in my stomach for extended hours. If I don’t eat I’m fine, but not eating causes my blood sugar to drop to 50 mg/dl [2.8 mmol/L], and then I pass out. Someone suggested that I may be insulin resistant until the food in my stomach gets to the liver.

My six year old drinks and urinates constantly, falls asleep everywhere, complains of feeling different, and has a very sweet smelling breath. After reading the symptoms of diabetes on your site, I am now concerned, and I am taking him to the doctor. Are these the symptoms I should be aware of? Why is diabetes life threatening?

I am 54 years old, I have been overweight all of my life, and I had an elevated insulin level following a glucose tolerance test, which my doctor says indicates I have “pre-diabetes”. I am on medication, but have been given no other guidance except to exercise and eat a healthy diet. What am I looking at?

Our son appeared to come off his honeymoon and went from 5 units of Lantus to 25 with Humalog at meals. He was doing very well for about three weeks, but then began having extreme lows and some highs. He went back to 5 units of Lantus and now, once again, is back to 25 units. Is it possible that he has type 1B diabetes since he has had negative antibodies on two different occasions. Is there a definite test for this? How do you deal with it?

I was diagnosed with “evolving type 1” diabetes about a month ago. At the time of diagnosis, my blood glucose was 486 mg/dl [27 mmol/L], I had glucose and ketones in my urine and my A1c was 8.6%. Other lab tests showed a normal C-peptide level, positive Gad65 antibodies, and an elevated urine albumin level. Is there any way to stop the destruction of my beta cells while I still have some of them?
