They ordered a GAD test which came back negative, so we thought he did not have diabetes, but his blood sugars still run high, and he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. What are the odds of the GAD test being negative and my grandson still having diabetes?

Two weeks ago, my daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She was being seen for another problem, but they found sugar in her urine, so they did a blood glucose which was 269 mg/dl [14.9 mmol/L]. They never took any blood other than using the meter. Within the last few weeks, my son has had two episodes at school during which he felt hot, dizzy, and his heart raced. I immediately took my son to the clinic where they performed a hemoglobin A1c which was 5.4% (Normal less than 5.7%). Should I be doing anything to assure it stays normal beside cutting out sugar? My doctors have been debating over what type of diabetes I have for over a year now. On the one hand, I’m a “classic type 1 according to my doctor, but on the other hand, I don’t have antibodies for type 1 diabetes, and more importantly, I have a very high C-peptide level, which would indicate type 2.
