I am 57 years old and have a strong family history of diabetes. Iad a fastiting blood done which was 130 mg/dl (7.2 mmol/L). After the five hour test my sugar level was 64 mg/dl (3.6 mmol/L). I was told everything was normal. I urinate a lot, am very thirsty and have blurred vision. There are times when I am very shaky and very lightheaded. The doctor refuses to do anything else. Should I consult with another doctor?

Over the past four years, my eight year old daughter has been gaining weight at a pretty rapid rate. I am concerned that type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance may be a problem. The pediatrician says if she does not have thirst, frequent urination, etc., she does not have diabetes. Do you think I should pursue a work-up for type 2? If so, what all should this include in a child?

My 14 year old son was originally diagnosed seven years ago. He has been on the same insulin dosage since his diagnosis. His blood sugars are always within range. His doctor recently did a glucose tolerance test and an antibody test. They came back normal. Could there be any damage from taking insulin for seven years? Could there be any other diagnosis?

I don’t think my son has full-blown type 1 diabetes yet, but I do think it is possible that his beta cells are slowing being destroyed. My fear is that he will develop ketoacidosis, and I’m not sure what to do. Am I on to something? Is there some sort of pattern I should look for? I’m a 17 year old male with cystic fibrosis (CF), and for the past few years, I have had symptoms of hypoglycemia. Did I have gestational diabetes? If so, did this lead to developing type 1 diabetes? Did I have gestational diabetes, and then by coincidence got type 1? Did I have type 1 diabetes all along, and the the DKA was delayed because of breastfeeding? My daughter does not show any adverse effects yet. Should I have any concerns about the effect all this had on her?

My 13 year old so was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and no one anywhere in the family on either side has ever had diabetes of any kind. How did my son get this? Do you have any theory as to how a child gets diabetes? Should I have my other children tested for diabetes or pre-diabetes? If so, what test should I ask for?
