Diagnosis and Symptoms

When my son was recently hospitalized for dehydration with the flu, he had an elevated blood sugar, and they told us he had diabetes, but later his blood sugars were normal, and they said he didn’t have it, even though he still had glucose and ketones in his urine. Should we be concerned that my son has diabetes? Was the high blood sugar due to his dehydration?

Please tell me that my never having had normoglycemia (having had reactive hypoglycemia, unexplained hypoglycemia, gestational diabetes, and impaired glucose tolerance) is not a character flaw, but perhaps symptomatic of an abnormal pancreas.

My eight day old son is not interested in eating, has had bowel movements only twice per day, and he sleeps a lot. Are we right to be worried?

I have gestational diabetes [GDM]in this pregnancy, and will have a follow-up GTT after the baby is born. Could a mom artificially pass (or fail) the GTT if her body is still “revved up” metabolically by nursing?

My 12 year old Caucasian son, who has had long history of being a little overweight, was diagnosed with type 1A diabetes, and he has negative islet cell antibodies. When I have asked him if there is a possibility of another type of diabetes, the doctor said does not see such a possibility, my son has Type 1A, and time will prove it. My daughter-in-law was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when she was 13 years old. She had repeated bouts of illnesses that eventually causes the physicians to diagnose the diabetes, but too late. She recently had a child who is now one year old, and she is very worried that the same thing will happen to her daughter.

My 13 year old daughter has had a 20 to 25 pound weight gain per year since she was six, despite low caloric intake. The endocrinologist diagnosed her with a goiter and stated she may be insulin resistant (prior to lab draws). Her A1c is 4.8%, and her thyroid tests are within normal range. What does a low A1c mean?

My six year old daughter was vaguely diagnosed with early diabetes, and now I am told she had reactive hypoglycemia and does not have diabetes. How can this be? Surely high blood sugars are not normal. Are there other tests I can request? Would a second opinion be justified?

Recently, my six year old daughter’s behavior has become (at times) uncontrollable. She is with above average in intelligence, but her grades aren’t what I know they can and should be, mostly because of lack of attention on her part. She seems to be far worse following the slightest sugar consumption (especially chocolate). A friend suggested that blood sugar fluctuation might be causing her problems. Could this be the case?
