Diagnosis and Symptoms

My six year old granddaughter has type 1, and her sister is eight months old. When should she be tested for diabetes?

My two-and-one-half year old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about two months ago. Since then, I have heard of similarly young aged children being diagnosed. Is there a rising incidence in younger children? Is there any known reason for the increase?

I suspect my daughter, age 6, may have diabetes. We have a family history and she has frequent and uncontrollable urination (her pants and underwear are wet almost daily). She’s always asking for water (thirsty).

We just got the test results back on my 11 year old son. His fasting blood sugar was 107 mg/dl [5.9 mmol/L] but his 3 hour glucose tolerance test was in the 300s {16.7 mmol/L]. What does this mean and why the variation?

Our six year old son has high blood fasting sugar levels regularly (120-130 mg/dl [6.7- 7.2 mmol/L]), but two hours after meals, he has normal levels. He tested negative for all antibodies, and an oral glucose tolerance test showed good response. Are there any indications of diabetes onset given these observations? What diet should he follow (zero sugar, carb counting, or normal)?

My daughter had an extremely high blood glucose which the doctor said was a classic case of type 1 diabetes, but since then blood glucose has been within normal range, except for a few high postprandial readings. Her A1c and antibody tests appear normal. The pediatrician says that she does not have diabetes, but I am concerned that she may be developing it.

I have always had a normal A1c (4%) and high glucose levels are never above 190 mg/dl [10.6 mmol/L]. If anything I’m experiencing lows lately. I was overweight before and gained it fast, but now I have lost way past and am still losing gradually. Do I have type 1 or type 2 diabetes or is there something else going on?

I am about 80 pounds overweight, and I get excruciating stomach pain (right under my chest). I start sweating, and I feel as though I am going to pass out. To make the symptoms go away, I pop a piece of candy in my mouth, and it goes away in a couple of minutes. Do you think I am having symptoms of diabetes?

My 14 month old daughter had two seizures following a day of vomiting. She underwent routine tests for seizures which were negative, and an endocrinologist told us the seizures were probably the result of low blood sugar. This left me terrified for fear that it will happen again if she ever contracts another virus. Should she be tested for type 1 diabetes?

My daughter was seen by an endocrinologist who suspects she will eventually develop type 1 diabetes. Is this the case? Are there other issues that should concern me? If this is possible, is there a time frame from these “early” symptoms of hypoglycemia to the actual onset of diabetes? How often should she be re-evaluated for antibodies?
