My son has recently gained quite a bit of weight, and information I have found concerning diabetes shows people usually lose weight before diagnosis. However, he does have frequent thirst and urination, and diabetes runs in my husband’s family. What are the other signs of diabetes? Is there something else that correlates to this?

My two and a half year old daughter drinks close to a gallon o water per day and has since she was small. The doctors checked her at age one, and they do not feel the need to check her again, because she has not lost/gained weight. A year ago, my son started with problems with his sugar, and his endocrinologist said his pancreas was producing too much insulin. So I started monitoring his sugar, which has fluctuated so much, and recent tests showed his pancreas is now producing very little insulin. The doctor has put him on a sugar free diet and wants to run more tests, but I think by this time we should be looking into insulin.

My five year old daughter periodically becomes very defiant, and my husband and I can sense it developing even though it comes on very quickly. This mood is typically accompanied by uncontrollable giggling and stumbling. Could this be hypoglycemia or just normal mood swings in a child?
