Diagnosis and Symptoms

My five year old daughter complained of discomfort when she urinated, and her doctor did not find an infection, but he did find a small amount of glucose. Her blood sugar level was 121 mg/dl [6.7 mmol/L] after a juice drink. What could cause the glucose in her urine?

My daughter had a urinalysis which showed 3+ glucose and 1+ ketones. A blood sugar taken at that time was 97 mg/dl [5.4 mmol/L], and two days later, she had a fasting blood sugar of 50 mg/dl [2.8 mmol/L], an A1c of 4.7%, and her urine was clear. One month repeat labs showed a fasting blood sugar of 87 mg/dl [4.8 mmol/L], and her urine is clear. My mom thinks we need to keep investigating as my daughter may be developing diabetes, but her pediatrician is not acting concerned. Where should I go from here?

My eight year old son has been putting on weight for the past year. He does go to the bathroom frequently, but I can’t really say that he drinks frequently. He is always hungry. Also, diabetes runs in his father’s side of the family. Should I just be encouraging the kid to exercise more and eat less, or do you think I should investigate the diabetes possibility?

My son’s pediatrician just called and said that he had a glucose reading of 187 mg/dl [10.4 mmol/L]. It was not a fasting test. He had not eaten breakfast that morning and ate some candy in the lab waiting room. What kind of effect would this have on his test?

My son was diagnosed with ketotic hypoglycemia a few months ago. He has been wetting and drinking a lot the past few days. He has shown high sugar levels in the past when ill. His endocrinologist said not to worry, it isn’t diabetes. His antibody test was negative. Is there a chance it could be diabetes, or is there some other metabolic disorder it might be?

I recently read in a local newspaper that an early symptom, among others, of diabetes was what appears to be dirt on a child’s neck that won’t wash off. My 8 year boy has this. Is it true about the dirt like markings around the neck?

My nine year old son was showing low blood sugar levels 40 mg/dl [2.2 mmol/L] a year or so ago. He recently had a blood test that showed a low insulin level and a slightly elevated creatine level. The doctor wants to retest him in six months and suspects possible diabetes onset. How does the creatine figure in?
