Diagnosis and Symptoms

My daughter took a sample of her one year old daughter’s urine to the doctor where said it had to go for further tests because it contained ketones. My grandchild has not been eating very well ever since she was weaned and this week she has lost weight rather than gained it. Are ketones a definite sign of diabetes or could it be something else?

Even though my three year old son is showing none of the classic signs of diabetes (except sometimes he is a little more thirsty than others), he has 3+ glucose in his urine, but blood glucose monitoring levels are normal. What else could be the cause of glycosuria in such a young child if not diabetes? Can diabetes be present but not picked up yet?
