Insulin Analogs

My adult son is on Ultralente with Regular, and his doctor wants to switch him to Lantus with Humalog. The problem is, since you can’t mix the two insulins, this means going from a minimum of three injections/day to four. Are there any fast acting insulins that will mix with Lantus?

I’m currently using Humalog in the pump and planning a pregnancy. The doctor hasn’t said anything about switching insulins. If your blood sugar has to be 105 before meals and no higher then 120 one hour after, how would you adjust if the Humalog peaks after 2 hours?

If Lantus is supposed to be so good, why does my child seem to be giving himself twice as many shots per day as before? He gives himself a shot of Humalog at every meal and liked the old method better with fewer injections.

I am on Insulatard [NPH] and Actrapid [Regular] and have recently asked to be put on Lantus. I am waiting to see my diabetes nurse about starting it. She is keen that I stay on Actrapid to cover the bolus, rather switch to a shorter lasting insulin. Given that Actrapid lasts 4-5 hours, do you think Humalog would be more appropriate?

Our son has had trouble with lows at night and waking up high. We have heard of ‘glargine’ the new long lasting insulin, and we wonder how this insulin is working for young boys. How is it best used? How does it give sustained release with no peaks? How hard is it to get used to using in conjunction with Humalog at meals?

I have been thinking of asking my eight year old daughter’s clinic about using Lantus insulin. However, I have been to a Lantus website, have just read the “product information”, and I am a bit concerned about what it says. Can you explain why I should or should not be concerned about this?

After seven years with type 1, I’ve had ingrown hairs in several places. My doctor says they are related to my hormones. Can the Humalog and Lantus I take be affecting my hormones?

I have heard that there is a new type of insulin out that a mother gives to her type 1 kids once a day only and that their blood sugar levels remain normal, regardless of what they eat. I know this is limited information, but does this sound plausible to you?
