My 14 year old son, who has had type 1 diabetes for five years and has been on an insulin pump for two years, will be playing football. How can he play football and still use the pump? Will he have to go back to injections during the football season, since it is a rough sport and his infusion set will probably be knocked off daily? Maybe he could wear the pump at night (insert it after practice is over) and take injections during the day?

I am an active 47 year old who has been insulin dependent for the past 30 years. I’ve been on the pump for just over a year, and I am absolutely ecstatic with the results. I am able to leave a set in on average for roughly five days without any irritation, discomfort or other adverse effect(s). Do you feel that this is an adequate rotation which will prevent future complications down the road?

Would it add years to my life?

A friend’s 12 year old son uses a pump. He is allowed to eat whatever he wants and a lot of it from what I see. He is very overweight and is about to begin growth hormone treatment. His parents tell me he can eat what he wants because “that is what the pump is for” — is that true?
