I have had type 1 diabetes and have been for 24 years. Three weeks ago, I started using an insulin pump. My blood glucose readings have been great except when I change the infusion set. For whatever reason, each time the set has been rotated my blood glucose starts to rise. Can you give me some direction to prevent this?

I asked my doctor for a pump, but said no because my A1c was too high. Even though the rest of my diabetes team wants me on a pump, they can’t get my doctor to sign for it. This is really irritating, and every time I am at the doctor she tells me I need to lower my A1c, but that’s about it. Is there another reason my doctor won’t let me on a pump?

The only real benefit the pump has given me was the freedom of eating meals late, or skipping them and not having to pull out a syringe. I don’t know if that is enough to justify staying on it and arguing for an upgrade of pumps with my insurance company. Should I go off the pump?

My 25 year old daughter went on the insulin pump a week ago and is having really high readings. The doctors are thinking she is allergic to the tubing from her pump and that she also may have gotten a bad batch of insulin. What else she can do if changing the location of the catheter doesn’t work? She is very frustrated and I am afraid she will give up before working this out.
