Meal Planning, Food and Diet

I have an eight year old daughter with type 1 diabetes. She has chosen to eat at school in the cafeteria. The school says that they need her diet broken down into ounces. I am not sure how to do that. I know she is on a 1600 calorie diet.

My son purchased and drank a 20 oz bottle of SoBe Tsunami. When he came home that evening, I noticed that the label says it contains 50 mg guarana and 50 mg taurine. We did some research on the Internet and found out that guarana is a stimulant and taurine is a protein with insulin-like properties. After drinking this “energy drink”, his blood sugar levels were out of range the rest of the day. Is this stuff safe to drink? What effect do these ingredients have on him?

My 12 year old grandson, diagnosed about one and a half years ago with diabetes, has continued substantial and frequent fluctuations in glucose levels, and there is considerable controversy in the family about the effects of carbs, proteins, and fats on this pre-teen. They are trying to find out how many carbohydrates he needs for his size and weight because his insurance won’t cover a dietitian, and they can’t afford one out of pocket. Can you tell us how many he needs?

My seven year old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about four months ago, and a nurse educator or a dietitian ( I’m not sure which one) said that if he ever wanted an extra treat or something to just let him have it and correct later, meaning to give him extra insulin to bring him down. Do you think this is okay to do once in a while or never?

I just read Dr. Bernstein’s book in which he says he has had diabetes for 60 years with no side effects. I am on his diet now, my sugars have been great, and I had to cut my insulin down to 5 units a meal from 40. I am also losing weight, but is this really healthy?
