Question from Phoenix, Arizona, USA:

Are there any links between antibiotics, such as Keflex, and diabetes? I have talked with a lot of people who took some kind of antibiotic prior to getting diagnosed with type 1.

Answer:

Not that I know of. The connection is between the infections that provoke the use of antibiotics and the ‘metabolic stress’ that the infection produces. This can be the last straw and the remaining insulin cells in the pancreas can no longer cope, hence the appearance of the diabetes symptoms.
