Question from Georgia, USA:

My son is vomiting and has an upset stomach. I can’t get him to eat anything. He was prescribed ondansetron odt 4mg tablet when we first visited the pharmacy to pick up his diabetes supplies. I never knew what it was and it has never been used . Would I use the ondansetron in this situation now to receive him of the upset stomach and vomiting?

Answer:

From: Marissa Town, BSN, RN, CDCES

You can use the ondansetron 4 mg as prescribed for nausea and vomiting, but you also want to make sure you check for ketones and call to check in with his pediatrician or endocrinologist. If he has ketones and they are large, you may need to go to the emergency room.
